THE STORY
The story behind the walls
Kuroda Nagamasa began the new castle in 1601. Completed over roughly seven years, it became the seat of Fukuoka Domain. Many buildings were lost after the Edo period, while the walls and enclosures retained its underlying plan. The Minamimaru Tamon Turret survives as a historic building. Shiomi Turret, which had been moved outside the castle, was reconstructed within the grounds in 2025 using historic components.

Enclosures at different levels spread around the main compound, supported by extensive walls. The keep platform offers an overview, but its existence alone does not establish the form of a former keep. The surviving Tamon Turret and the relocated-and-reconstructed Shiomi Turret illustrate different conservation histories.

Keep platform
The keep platform is now a viewpoint over the castle grounds and city. It helps reveal the enclosures even where their buildings are gone.
Tamon Turret
The Minamimaru Tamon Turret is an Important Cultural Property. Its elongated form shows how architecture used and defended the wall line.
Shiomi Turret
Historic components were used to reconstruct the relocated turret within the castle in 2025. It represents the return of relocated heritage, rather than a wholly new building.
