What is JLPT N2?

JLPT N2 is the second-highest level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. It is the level most employers in Japan actually ask for, and the point where the vocabulary shifts from daily conversation to newspapers, business email and formal writing.

To pass N2, you need to know around 6,000 vocabulary words and 1,000 kanji. This free quiz covers 130 essential N2 words across 4 categories: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs/expressions. None of them repeat the words in our N5, N4 or N3 quizzes.

๐Ÿ’ก How to use this quiz effectively

  • Already solid at N3? Go straight to "All" mode to find your gaps
  • Start with Nouns โ€” N2 nouns are the vocabulary of news and business (้œ€่ฆ, ไพ›็ตฆ, ๆ นๆ‹ , ๅฏพ็ญ–) and appear constantly in the reading section
  • The -็š„ adjectives come in opposing pairs: ็ฉๆฅต็š„/ๆถˆๆฅต็š„, ๅ…ทไฝ“็š„/ๆŠฝ่ฑก็š„, ๅฎข่ฆณ็š„/ไธป่ฆณ็š„. Learn them two at a time
  • Many N2 verbs are the formal twin of a word you know: ็”Ÿใ˜ใ‚‹ for ่ตทใ“ใ‚‹, ่ฟฐในใ‚‹ for ่จ€ใ†. The explanation flags which is which
  • Try the same category multiple times โ€” questions are randomized each round
  • Aim for 90%+ on "All" mode before moving to JLPT N1
